Three Chamber Wood Bat House Description:
The exterior is 1/2" thick yellow pine plywood. The decorative bat design on the front is actually a vent that helps prevent bats from overheating. All seams are caulked to ensure an airtight seal that provides optimum roosting temperatures.
All interior surfaces have been roughened by hand for the best "batholds" possible. We DO NOT use screen material for baffles as it can shred over time and pups can become trapped under it. This box should be painted appropriately for your area, generally black or a shade of brown (color charts are included in the instruction manual). Includes 17-page manual with complete finishing, site determination, installation, and maintenance instructions. Beware of vendors hawking cheap bat houses with nonexistent documentation; they might not know what they are selling.
A pole mount is suggested if placing this box on a post. This bat house has been built as a demonstration during Bat Conservation International's annual Bat Conservation and Management Pennsylvania Workshop each year since 2002.
How to finish this bat house:
1. Paint or stain a color according to your climate (see manual).
2. Use sealant to caulk around the roof then glue on the included roofing shingle.
3. Screw the bat house to the pole mount and a 4''x6''x16' post (~$35 at local lumber yards) or the sunny side of a structure. Metal telescoping poles sold by bird house vendors are too flimsy for this bat house.
4. Use the remaining sealant to coat the upper mounting lip of the bat house that will be exposed to weather
5. Touch up the paint and just add bats!
